Grigore Sichitiu has criticised the current state of Romanian football, suggesting that national team coach Gică Hagi does not have access to an effective striker. Sichitiu pointed to Louis Munteanu and Daniel Bîrligea as the current options but implied they are insufficient for the national side's needs.
The criticism comes as the Romania national team struggles in international competition. The side has lost all four of its Nations League matches played so far in the current campaign.
Sichitiu identified a structural issue within the domestic league as the root of the problem. He stated that no team among the top six in the SuperLiga featured a Romanian striker during the previous year or in the current season.
According to Sichitiu, this absence of local talent up front is linked to roster composition in the league. He claimed that Romanian teams rely too heavily on foreign players who offer only modest value.
Sichitiu concluded that the current generation of players lacks viable solutions for the national team. His comments highlight the disconnect between domestic recruitment trends and the requirements of the senior national squad under Gică Hagi.
