How Romanian clubs qualify for European football

Romania’s Champions League, Europa League and Conference League routes: league places, the cup and confirmed 2026–27 entry examples.

Season 2026–27 European entry; not a prediction for 2027–28 · Reviewed

How does a Romanian club qualify for Europe?

Domestic league results, the Romanian Cup and qualification play-offs determine the sporting routes. UEFA’s access list then sets the competition and entry stage, subject to its admission rules. A place in qualifying is not a place in the league phase.

This guide explains the confirmed 2026–27 European entry. The SuperLiga season being played during 2026–27 leads towards the next European campaign, 2027–28; the two should not be confused.

Does the Romanian champion enter the Champions League?

Yes: where an association has one Champions League representative, UEFA identifies that representative as the domestic champion. The access list determines the starting round; winning the domestic title does not by itself guarantee a place in the Champions League league phase.

Does winning the Romanian Cup give a European place?

The domestic cup winner has a route into the Europa League under UEFA’s entry rules. If that club also qualifies for the Champions League through the league, redistribution rules apply. Do not automatically award the cup route to the losing finalist or read it from the league table alone.

Which Romanian clubs entered Europe in 2026–27?

FRF’s 17 June 2026 announcement lists four entrants: Universitatea Craiova in Champions League qualifying, Universitatea Cluj in Europa League qualifying, and FCSB and CFR Cluj in Conference League qualifying. It records FCSB as the winner of a European play-off against Dinamo.

These are historical entry examples for the stated season. They do not describe the clubs’ current progress, prove that they reached a league phase, or assign places for the following season.

Can a club continue in Europe after a qualifying defeat?

Yes, at specified stages. UEFA’s Conference League entry table, for example, sends a team eliminated in the first Champions League qualifying round on the Champions Path to the second Conference League qualifying round. Other routes depend on the competition, path and round; elimination does not always mean the same outcome.

Does today’s SuperLiga table confirm next season’s European places?

No. The table records domestic standings at a point in time. Final results, the cup outcome, any applicable domestic play-off, the next season’s access list and admission decisions must be established before naming qualified teams. We do not forecast 2027–28 places from the current standings.
