Romanian coach Mirel Rădoi is the primary target for Greek club Asteras Tripolis, with reports indicating that negotiations between the two parties are advanced. The club is seeking a replacement after parting ways with head coach Giorgos Antonopoulos.
Asteras Tripolis dismissed Antonopoulos following a 0-2 home defeat to Kifisia. Antonopoulos had conducted his last training session on Wednesday, October 28, having been with the club since 2024.
The change in management comes as Asteras Tripolis sits in 11th place in the league table. After eight matches, the team has accumulated six points from one win, three draws and four losses.
Rădoi is currently a free agent after leaving Turkish club Gaziantep in late August 2026. His departure followed a 1-2 home loss to Rizespor, which capped a seven-match stint that yielded one win, one draw and five defeats.
During his time at Gaziantep, Rădoi started with a 1-1 draw against Alanyaspor and a 1-0 win over Eyupspor. However, he lost his final four matches of the season, including defeats to Eyupspor, Beșiktaș, Goztepe and Bașakșehir.
Greek journalists have described Rădoi as unknown internationally and noted that he lacks notable international coaching results. Despite this assessment, reports state he is the main candidate for the role at Asteras Tripolis.
Rădoi previously coached the Romania national team, the Romania U21 squad, Universitatea Craiova, Al-Tai, Al-Bataeh, Al-Jazira and FCSB. He also managed FCSB for five matches in spring 2026 before joining Gaziantep, having previously refused an offer to return to the club.
His earlier tenure at FCSB consisted of four matches, resulting in two wins, one draw and one loss. As a player, Rădoi earned 67 caps and scored two goals for Romania, participating in EURO 2008. He played for FCSB from 2000 to 2009 before transferring to Al-Hilal for 6 million euros.
Reports indicate that Rădoi requires bringing all his collaborators when signing with clubs. This condition is part of the ongoing discussions as he moves closer to taking charge in Greece.
