Marian Iancu comments on Universitatea Craiova's Conference League win over Inter d’Escaldes

Universitatea Craiova defeated Inter d’Escaldes 3-1 in Andorra on 22 October 2026. The match was part of round 2 of the main phase of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The victory moved Universitatea Craiova to four points in the Conference League main phase standings. In the inaugural round of the competition, the Romanian side drew 1-1 at home with La Liga club Getafe.

Marian Iancu, the former owner of Politehnica Timișoara from 2005 to 2013, commented on the European performance via social media. He stated that he had previously claimed the potential of Universitatea Craiova was better suited for the Conference League group stage rather than qualifiers for the Champions League or Europa League.

Iancu noted that the recent result supported his earlier assessment. His remarks followed the away win against the Andorran side, which secured three points for the Oltenia-based club.

Universitatea Craiova won the Romanian championship title at the end of the 2025-2026 season. This domestic success qualified the team for European competition in the current campaign.

Data from Transfermarkt values the squad of Universitatea Craiova at nearly 37 million euros. In comparison, their next opponent KF Egnatia is valued at 7.7 million euros.

The club is scheduled to play KF Egnatia at home on 5 November at 22:00 in the Conference League. This fixture follows the recent victory in Andorra.

Further fixtures include an away match against Brighton on 26 November at 19:45. The team will also travel to face Kairat Almaty on 10 December at 17:30.

Universitatea Craiova will conclude this set of matches with a home game against FC Copenhaga on 17 December at 22:00. These dates are set for the ongoing Conference League main phase.
