Universitatea Cluj defeated CFR Cluj with a score of 3-1 in a rescheduled match from the fourth round of the Romanian Superliga on October 8, 2026. The result marked a significant win for the home side at the Gruia Stadium.

CFR Cluj took an early lead through a goal by Drazic before halftime. However, Universitatea Cluj responded strongly in the second half to secure the victory.

Issouf Macalou scored twice for Universitatea Cluj, marking his first league goals for the club after previously only scoring in cup competitions. Mendy also found the net for the winners to complete the scoring.

Captain Alexandru Chipciu provided the assist for Macalou’s second goal. This contribution ended a personal dry spell, as Chipciu noted he had not recorded a goal or assist earlier in the year despite feeling he had played well.

Cristiano Bergodi made three substitutions at halftime for Universitatea Cluj. These changes helped turn the game around, with Bosnia national team player Jovo Lukic coming off the bench to add value to the performance.

Following the match, Alex Chipciu criticized the condition of the pitch at Gruia. He stated that the home team had left the grass tall to hinder construction play, but this tactic ultimately backfired against CFR Cluj.

Chipciu also pointed out issues with dry grass and night lighting. He explained that the soft pitch had hindered building play in the first half, but the momentum shifted after his team scored.

The captain assessed that the balance of power has shifted in favor of Universitatea Cluj due to their squad depth. He contrasted this with CFR Cluj, which he described as being in a difficult period.

Chipciu highlighted the contribution of Issouf Macalou, describing him as an external winger who played a significant role in the win. He noted that matches between his team and CFR Cluj have consistently been high-scoring affairs.

Looking ahead, Chipciu acknowledged upcoming difficult fixtures against Rapid and FC Argeș. He noted that Rapid has been strong away from home, having lost only once this season.
