Former Romania national team captain Gică Hagi may have earned at least 30 million dollars during his five-year spell at Galatasaray, according to estimates by journalist Adrian Florea. Speaking on the iAM Retro podcast, Florea calculated that the cumulative total of salaries and performance bonuses reached this significant figure during a period when European football remuneration was generally lower than present levels.
The financial package was negotiated by agent Giovanni Becali, whom Florea described as highly effective in securing advantageous terms. The agreement reportedly included an annual guaranteed salary ranging between two and four million dollars. Additionally, the contract featured substantial performance incentives, including a one million dollar bonus for winning a European trophy and a 10,000 dollar payment for each match appearance.
Hagi joined the Istanbul club in 1996 after considering an offer from Mexico, a decision Florea attributed primarily to financial considerations. During his tenure from 1996 to 2001, the midfielder made 189 official appearances and scored 73 goals. His time at the club coincided with a period of significant success, including four consecutive Turkish league titles from the 1996-1997 to the 1999-2000 seasons.
The highlight of Hagi's European campaign with Galatasaray came in 2000. The team won the UEFA Cup after defeating Arsenal in a final decided by penalty kicks, despite Hagi being sent off in extra time. Later that year, the club secured the European Super Cup with a victory over Real Madrid. These achievements contributed to the historical significance of Hagi's contract and his legacy at the club.
