Adrian Mutu is considered the main favorite to replace Costin Curelea as the coach of the Romania U21 national team. This assessment comes from local media reports discussing the future leadership of the youth squad.

Journalist Horia Ivanovici stated that the decision regarding the new coach has already been made and suggested that Mutu will return to the position soon. Ivanovici also claimed that Romanian Football Federation president Răzvan Burleanu holds Mutu in high regard.

During a discussion with Ivanovici, Mutu joked that he has always supported Burleanu. The conversation included lighthearted remarks about potential salary figures for the role, but these comments were presented as jokes rather than formal negotiations.

Despite the speculation about an imminent return, Mutu indicated that he is interested in the U21 job but currently prefers to coach a club team. He has been without a contract for one and a half years.

Mutu clarified that he has not received any concrete offer for the position. He noted that he has refused several other proposals during his period out of work.

Mihai Stoichiță described Mutu as a very good coach but stated that nothing is officially decided regarding his potential role with the U21 team. Andrei Vochin also identified Mutu as one of the candidates for the post, describing him as a strong option.

Mutu previously coached the Romania U21 team and led them to qualification for the 2021 European Championship. During that tournament, Romania drew with Netherlands and Germany and defeated Hungary in the group stage.

The team accumulated five points in the group stage but did not qualify for the knockout rounds. Mutu terminated his contract with the Romanian Football Federation in May 2021 to join FC U Craiova 1948.
