Adrian Mutu has expressed a preference for returning to club management rather than taking the vacant Romania U21 head coach position. He stated that while he favors a club environment, he would not refuse the opportunity to collaborate with Gheorghe Hagi at the Romanian Football Federation (FRF).

Mutu confirmed that no formal offer has reached him yet regarding the national youth team role. His comments come amid reports that FRF officials are considering him for the position following the departure of the previous coach.

The Romania U21 head coach position became vacant after Costin Curelea’s contract ended. The non-renewal followed the team's failure to qualify for the 2027 European Championship.

Romania’s qualification campaign ended with a third-place finish in Preliminary Group A. The team accumulated 16 points, trailing Spain with 27 points and Finland with 23 points.

The final match of the campaign saw Romania lose 7-1 to Spain U21 in Ibiza. This result contributed to the decision to end Curelea’s tenure, which was also marked by a media scandal involving his attendance at a party before the match.

This failure marks the first time in four cycles that the Romania U21 team will miss the final tournament. Officials have indicated they aim to name a new head coach by the end of the year.

Mutu previously served as the Romania U21 coach from 2020 to 2021. He took over the role in January 2020 after Mirel Rădoi moved to the senior national team setup.

During his previous stint, Mutu led the team to qualification for Euro 2021. The squad remained undefeated in the group stage, drawing with the Netherlands and Germany, and defeating Hungary.

Despite going unbeaten, Romania finished third in their Euro 2021 group due to goal difference. The team drew 1-1 with the Netherlands, lost 2-1 to Hungary, and drew 0-0 with Germany in the tournament matches.

Mutu has been without a club contract since leaving Petrolul in March. He has coached the national youth team for seven matches in total during his previous tenure.

The former striker shares the record for most goals scored for the Romanian national team with Gheorghe Hagi. Both players have netted 35 goals in their international careers.

Mutu has identified the senior national team coach position, currently held by Hagi, as a long-term ambition. Reports suggest he is a favorite for the U21 role, though he maintains his preference for club football.
