Farul lost 3-1 to Petrolul in a match where supporters directed insults at majority shareholder Gică Popescu. Fans displayed banners criticizing the 59-year-old owner during the game. Ioan Ovidiu Sabău is the coach of the team whose fans voiced these complaints.
Popescu addressed the situation on the show Digi Sport Special. He stated that the anger from the stands resulted from an official apology issued by the club. This statement followed an incident during a previous match against Dinamo.
During the Dinamo fixture, a flare thrown by Farul fans hit the VIP area. A woman was hospitalized as a result of the injury. Reports indicate that the injured woman expressed a desire to sue the club over the incident.
Popescu claimed that club management proposed the wording of the apology statement. He said he only provided final approval for the release. The owner asserted that supporting the fans in this matter would have caused serious legal problems for the organization.
