Dragomir names potential successors as Iorgulescu seeks fourth LPF term

Gino Iorgulescu has officially announced his candidacy for a fourth consecutive term as president of the Romanian Professional Football League (LPF). The current president, who has held the position since 2013, is preparing for the upcoming electoral cycle. New elections for the leadership of the association are scheduled to take place in April 2027.

Dumitru Dragomir, the former LPF president who led the organization from 1996 to 2013, has offered his perspective on potential successors. Dragomir suggested that Iorgulescu should step aside to allow younger individuals to take charge of the league. He cited concerns regarding Iorgulescu's age and physical condition as reasons for this recommendation.

Dragomir named four prominent figures in Romanian football as possible candidates: Cristi Balaj, Dani Coman, Ciprian Marica, and Mihai Stoica. He described Marica as wealthy and multilingual, while noting Coman's experience as a club president at FC Argeș, Astra Giurgiu, and FC Hermannstadt. Dragomir also mentioned that Balaj would be a good president, though he questioned his level of support.

Despite the speculation surrounding other candidates, Justin Stefan, the general secretary of the LPF, has ruled himself out of the race. Stefan publicly stated that he will not compete for the presidency as long as Gino Iorgulescu remains a candidate. This declaration narrows the field of potential challengers ahead of the 2027 vote.
