The Chamber of Deputies has adopted a legislative initiative that grants merit allowances to Romanian athletes who have won major European club trophies. This decision opens the path for financial recognition of past continental successes achieved by Romanian club teams.

The new law applies regardless of the year in which the trophy was won. This means that footballers from the Steaua squad that won the European Champions Cup in 1986 are among those who may receive these merit allowances.

The legislation specifies which competitions qualify for the allowance. Eligible trophies include the European Champions Cup, the Champions League, and the European Super Cup, provided they were won by Romanian club teams.

To receive the allowance, the performance must be certified. The national sports federation is responsible for this certification, based on official competition or club documents.

A National Commission for granting merit allowances will oversee the process. This commission includes presidents of parliamentary committees, the President of the Romanian Academy, and ministers.
