Bogdan Lobonţ has announced that he no longer wishes to pursue a career as a football coach. The former goalkeeper made the decision public following comments by Victor Piţurcă, who had nominated him as a Romanian manager deserving of an opportunity in the SuperLiga. Lobonţ explicitly ruled out taking charge of the Romania U21 national team, stating simply that he does not want to be a coach anymore.

Lobonţ thanked Piţurcă for mentioning his name during a recent intervention but explained that he believes he can contribute more effectively from a different professional posture. He noted that while his coaching experience was valuable, he feels better prepared and understands other dynamics more clearly in non-coaching roles. This decision comes despite Piţurcă’s broader criticism of the current state of Romanian football management.

Victor Piţurcă has been vocal about his frustration with Romanian clubs preferring foreign technicians over local talent. He argued that it is a pity that anonymous coaches, such as certain Portuguese managers or former assistants, are hired when they are not superior in value to Romanian counterparts. Piţurcă emphasized his confidence in domestic coaches, pointing out that many qualified individuals are currently sidelined.

In highlighting the lack of opportunities for local managers, Piţurcă cited several specific examples. He noted that Adrian Mutu is currently on the sidelines, while Florin Bratu was forced to leave for unknown destinations. He also mentioned that Nicolae Iencsi is coaching at the youth level and questioned why Bogdan Lobonţ is not allowed to coach, suggesting these individuals possess international-level quality.

Lobonţ’s coaching career began in the 2018-2019 season at Universitatea Cluj. He later joined the staff of the Romania national team under Cosmin Contra and served as the head coach of the Romania U20 side between August 2021 and June 2022. In 2023, he held multiple roles at Rapid, including goalkeeping coach, interim coach and assistant. His most recent position was as technical director at CSM Olimpia Satu Mare, where he worked from January to October 2025.
