Al-Arabi head coach Cosmin Contra has provided further clarification regarding his future in football management, stating that his potential retirement is not a finalized decision. The fifty-year-old Romanian technician emphasized that while he has considered stepping away, the outcome is not one hundred percent certain.
Contra explained that the primary motivation behind his contemplation of a break is a desire to spend more time with his family. He noted that his career has required significant sacrifices and long periods of absence from home, leading him to consider a pause to prioritize personal life.
This recent clarification follows an announcement made a week earlier, where Contra revealed he had been thinking about quitting coaching for some time. At that time, he suggested that developments in Qatar over the last year and a half could influence his final decision.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his immediate future, Contra was categorical when asked if a European offer could change his mind about retiring. He stated firmly that if he decides to leave coaching, he will do so completely, ruling out a return to European football under such circumstances.
Contra has extensive experience in both European and Middle Eastern football. His coaching resume includes tenures at FC Timișoara, Petrolul, and Dinamo in Romania, as well as Getafe in Spain. More recently, he has managed several clubs in the Persian Gulf region, including Al-Ittihad, Damac, Al-Kholood, and his current club, Al-Arabi.
Before his club management roles in the Gulf, Contra served as the head coach of the Romania national team. He held the position from September 2017 to November 2019, during which he led the national side in twenty-four matches.
