Gica Dobrin has stated that Nicolae Dobrin’s proposed transfer to Real Madrid failed because communist authorities did not permit him to leave Romania permanently. She addressed long-standing rumors about the collapsed deal in a recent interview.
Gica Dobrin denied suggestions that her husband returned to or remained in Romania due to homesickness for his wife or local food. She attributed the outcome solely to the political restrictions of the era.
The connection between Dobrin and the Spanish club dates back to 1972. He participated in Paco Gento’s retirement match and wore the Real Madrid shirt during the event.
Reports at the time indicated that Real Madrid offered two million euros for the transfer. The accuracy of this figure remains uncertain in historical accounts.
Dobrin built his career at FC Argeș, where he won two league titles in 1972 and 1979. His domestic success coincided with his international recognition.
He earned 48 caps for the Romania national team and scored six goals. His international career included participation in the 1972 European Championship.
Dobrin was part of the Romania squad that qualified for the 1970 World Cup. He did not play in the tournament due to a conflict with coach Angelo Niculescu.
