The Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) has responded to criticism regarding the suspension of Umathum Roland, the 15-year-old captain of the Hungarian U16 national team. The federation described the four-month ban as the mildest possible penalty under the circumstances, asserting it closely aligned with the minimum sanctions outlined in their disciplinary code.
Umathum, a talent from ETO FC, was prohibited from participating in football-related activities until 15 February 2027. The sanction resulted from an incident during a friendly match against Lithuania, where the defender pushed a referee with his chest in the closing stages of the game. He was issued a red card in the 94th minute following the altercation.
In its statement, the MLSZ explained that the Disciplinary Committee investigated the matter due to the serious nature of the unsportsmanlike conduct. The committee adhered strictly to the Disciplinary Rules, which stipulate a mandatory minimum three-month ban for any player attempting physical violence against a match official.
The federation noted that the imposed four-month suspension exceeded the mandatory three-month lower limit by only a small margin. Consequently, the MLSZ characterized the decision as being very close to the minimum penalty allowed by the regulations for such an offense.
Despite the ban extending into early 2027, the practical impact on Umathum's playing time is limited. Since youth league competitions do not restart until mid-February, the suspension effectively prevents him from playing only until mid-December, when there are no scheduled matches anyway.
