Inter Milan lost 3-4 to Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League on October 13, 2026. The match took place during the second round of the main phase on a Tuesday evening.
Coach Cristi Chivu stated he is the primary person responsible for the defeat. He admitted to failing to make necessary tactical adjustments during the game. Chivu also said he did not maximize the mental capacity of his players.
Chivu explained that frustration caused the team to lose distance and balance. This issue was particularly evident when the score was 1-2. He acknowledged that two defeats harm the team. Chivu noted that six matches remain in the Champions League campaign.
Club Brugge attacker Nicolo Tresoldi scored three goals against Inter Milan. The 22-year-old player was the standout performer for the visitors.
Tresoldi’s father revealed to Gazzetta dello Sport that his son has been an AC Milan fan since childhood. Tresoldi claimed that AC Milan supporters encouraged him to score against Cristi Chivu’s team.
Italian media gave coach Cristi Chivu a grade of 5 after the defeat. Critics blamed Chivu for failing to motivate players to avoid repeating first-half mistakes.
Commentators noted that Chivu does not strike the right chord with the squad. They suggested his team underestimated the opponent.
Fabio Capello stated that Inter played below their usual level. He claimed the team failed to match the opponents' pace. Capello also said Akanji's physical condition raises questions and that the defender did not meet expectations.
Martinez made an error when the score was 2-1. However, he later made three important interventions that kept Inter in the game.
