CFR Cluj owner Ioan Varga has publicly stated that the club aims to qualify for the Champions League. This announcement comes as the team looks to move forward after exiting insolvency proceedings. Varga outlined a specific strategy for squad construction to support this high-level ambition. He plans to build a team where no more than two or three starters are older than 26 years of age. This approach suggests a focus on younger players for the core of the starting lineup.

In contrast to the owner's European aspirations, head coach Marius Șumudică has defined a more immediate and conservative objective. Șumudică stated that his personal target is to keep CFR Cluj in the first league. His primary focus is on avoiding relegation rather than competing for continental spots. These divergent statements from the club's leadership and coaching staff highlight different priorities for the season.

The differing views come during a difficult period for the team on the pitch. On Sunday evening, CFR Cluj suffered a 0-1 defeat against UTA Arad. This result marked the sixth loss for the club in the championship so far. The defeat contributes to a challenging start to the campaign for the side from Cluj.

After 12 rounds of matches, CFR Cluj sits in eighth place in the league table. The team has accumulated 16 points from these fixtures. Their current position reflects the mixed results experienced during the early part of the season. The gap between their standing and the European qualification places remains significant.

Despite the owner's stated ambition for Champions League qualification, there are regulatory hurdles currently in place. CFR Cluj is still in a state of insolvency. As a result of this financial status, the club is not permitted to participate in European cups. This restriction applies regardless of sporting performance in domestic competitions until the insolvency status is fully resolved.
