Sunderland AFC enters their Europa League fourth round fixture against GNK Dinamo Zagreb while sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table. The English club has managed only five points from nine league matches, with their sole victory coming in August against Fulham. This poor domestic form contrasts with their continued participation in European competition, creating a difficult schedule for the squad.

Recent results have intensified the pressure on the team, including a 3-1 defeat to Coventry City. Manager Regis Le Bris admitted that the league standings reflect a problematic situation but noted that the club anticipated challenges due to their first season with European commitments. Le Bris stated that the team expected to earn approximately ten fewer points in the league as a result of the additional fixtures.

Despite the poor run of form, Le Bris affirmed that he retains the confidence of sporting director Florent Ghisolfi. He emphasized the collective effort required to reach this stage and expressed determination to navigate the current crisis without abandoning the club's objectives.

The squad faces significant selection issues due to injuries ahead of the match against Dinamo Zagreb. Midfielder Habib Diarra sustained a muscle injury in training prior to the Coventry match and is considered doubtful for upcoming games. Defender Nordi Mukiele will miss the fixture after suffering a concussion in a collision with teammate Luke O'Nien during a match against Leeds.

Further absences include Dan Ballard, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury since September and is not expected to return until late November or December. Winger Romaine Mundle is also unavailable as he recovers from knee surgery, with a potential return targeted for January. These injuries leave Sunderland weakened for their upcoming European contest.
