Marius Măldărășanu has publicly declined the offer to become the head coach of the Romania U21 national team. He stated that he prefers the routine of daily club coaching over the role of a national team selector.

The Romanian Football Federation identified Măldărășanu as a candidate to replace Costin Curelea. The federation considered him for the position following the end of Curelea's mandate.

Curelea's tenure concluded after the team failed to qualify for Euro U21 2027. His contract was not renewed due to this failure to reach the next European Championship.

The qualification campaign ended with Romania finishing third in their group. They accumulated 16 points, placing them behind Spain and Finland. The final match was a 1-7 defeat to Spain in Ibiza.

Măldărășanu explained his decision by citing a desire to avoid a long break from active management. He noted that the national team role would involve an eight-month period without daily coaching duties.

He has been without a club since the end of 2025. This followed a four-year tenure at Hermannstadt, where he coached in 187 matches between 2021 and 2025.

His previous career also includes spells at Metaloglobus and Astra Giurgiu. These roles contributed to his experience before his long stint at Hermannstadt.

Adrian Mutu remains a primary option for the FRF after Măldărășanu turned down the post. Mutu has expressed willingness to return to the U21 role.

Mutu previously served as the Romania U21 head coach from January 2020 to April 2021. During that period, he guided the team to Euro U21 2021.

The 47-year-old has been without a team since March 2025. This followed a two-month stint at Petrolul, which ended earlier in the year.
