UEFA has appointed Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs to officiate the UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and RB Leipzig on October 21, 2026. The fixture is scheduled to kick off at 22:00. This assignment marks Kovacs' first match in the main phase of the current Champions League edition.

Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi will serve as assistant referees for Kovacs during the match. Szabolcs Kovacs has been designated as the reserve referee for the fixture. Tomasz Kwiatkowski and Bram Van Driessche will assist from the VAR room.

Real Madrid enters the match with maximum points after two games, sitting in eighth place in the standings. The Spanish club recently defeated Sevilla 4-1 in the ninth round of their domestic championship. The match against Leipzig serves as their final preparation before a Sunday derby against Barcelona.

RB Leipzig currently holds three points and occupies the 21st position in the table. The German side recently suffered a 1-6 defeat to Bayern Munchen in the sixth round of their domestic league. They face a difficult task against the Spanish leaders.

Kovacs' previous European assignment was the Champions League qualifier second leg between Bodo Glimt and Union St. Gilloise on August 11, 2026. Bodo Glimt eliminated Union Saint-Gilloise with a 3-2 score in extra time during that match. Kovacs also refereed a qualifier between Sabah and Hapoel Beer Sheva, which ended 5-2.

The August match drew criticism from Union Saint-Gilloise leadership. David Hubert stated that Kovacs did not meet expectations and failed to control emotions during the game. Union Saint-Gilloise officials accused the referee of making decisions that disadvantaged them. Adem Zorgane and Raul Florucz were sent off after the final whistle in that contest.

In domestic competition, Kovacs recently officiated the SuperLiga match between Dinamo and FCSB, which ended with a 2-1 score. He also refereed the Oțelul vs Csikszereda match, which resulted in a 1-1 draw. These recent domestic assignments precede his return to the European stage.

This appointment represents Kovacs's sixth time officiating a match involving Real Madrid. It will be his first time taking charge of a game featuring RB Leipzig. In previous encounters with Real Madrid under his supervision, the Spanish club has recorded three wins and two losses. One notable result was a 3-4 defeat to Manchester City during the 2021/2022 season.
