Dan Alexa has stated that former referee Sorin Altmayer approached him with an offer of 500,000 euros to fix a match. Alexa identified the specific game as the first-leg encounter against Dinamo Zagreb, which Poli Timișoara lost 0-3 at home. He described the incident as a national case at the time and asserted that he rejected the proposal.
Sorin Altmayer has consistently denied these allegations. In a statement provided to ProSport in 2009, Altmayer characterized the story as pure fiction. He expressed shock at the situation and suggested that personal health issues within his family were being exploited to damage his reputation. Altmayer questioned who might wish to denigrate his image.
Despite his denial, Altmayer faced professional consequences following the scandal. He was suspended from his activities, which included serving on the Romanian Football Federation's Executive Committee and working as a referee observer. The controversy involved not only Alexa but also the club's leadership at the time, including owner Marian Iancu.
Dan Alexa was a player for Poli Timișoara during the period in question. His tenure with the club spanned from 2006 to 2011, a time when the team was under the patronage of Marian Iancu. This era saw the club compete in European competitions, including the Europa League group stage where they faced teams such as Ajax Amsterdam and Anderlecht.
