How Bulgarian clubs qualify for Europe
First League, the domestic cup and UEFA entry explained: how to distinguish the Bulgarian qualification race from a confirmed European place.
Start with the domestic competition
BFU’s 2026–27 structure includes a championship group and a separate group for positions five to eight, described as the Conference League group. That group’s label does not mean all four clubs qualify for Europe. The season’s play-off rules, the domestic cup outcome and admission requirements still matter.

Why the cup and final standings matter
First-stage points carry into the second phase, but a regular-season position is not a final European berth. Establish whether a report refers to the group race, a qualification play-off or confirmed UEFA admission. The Bulgarian Cup offers a separate domestic route that can change how league places are allocated.

Which European season does the place belong to?
Separate the season in which a place is earned from the European season it admits a club to. Domestic results in 2026–27 usually concern entry in 2027–28. UEFA’s access list identifies entry stages by association and competition; coefficient positions, rebalancing and admission requirements mean a table position should not be converted into a guaranteed league-phase place.

What happens when qualification routes overlap?
If the domestic cup winner also earns a Champions League place, UEFA’s entry rules adjust the remaining allocation. The cup runner-up does not simply inherit the winner’s European berth. Before calling a club qualified, check the final domestic results, applicable cup overlap, the correct season’s access list and licensing or disciplinary decisions.
