Manchester City secured a 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town, a match in which Mateo Kovačić played a significant role before being forced off. The Croatian midfielder contributed to the attack with an assist for Erling Haaland but had his performance cut short in the 50th minute due to an injury. His departure raised immediate concerns about his availability for upcoming fixtures, particularly the Champions League clash against AEK Athens.
Enzo Fernández entered the match to replace Kovačić following the substitution. Initial reports suggested the Croatian international might miss the European fixture, but manager Enzo Maresca moved quickly to alleviate fears. Speaking shortly after the conclusion of the match against Ipswich, Maresca revealed that Kovačić had communicated he was feeling well, suggesting the issue was not severe.
During a press conference held the following day ahead of the AEK Athens game, Maresca provided further clarity on the squad's medical status. He indicated that most players, including Kovačić, Matheus Nunes, and Nico O'Reilly, were largely free of major problems. This update contrasted with the situation of Antoine Semenyo, who suffered a knee injury against Ipswich and is projected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks.
Attention also turned to Erling Haaland, who sustained a blow during the same match. Maresca stated that the Norwegian striker could be available for selection against AEK, noting that he looked better in training than before. The manager emphasized that final decisions would depend on training sessions and remaining doubts following the Sunday fixture.
